Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the formation of a board to ascertain feasibility for the medical termination of pregnancy of a minor girl who was gangraped.
Hearing the case, a single bench of Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharya directed the formation of the medical board of four experts within 24 hours who will be conducting the medical examination of the victim within the next 48 hours. Justice Bhattacharya has also directed that the medical team should have one gynecologist and a pediatrician. The bench will hear the matter again on August 21 when the court will take a decision on the termination of the pregnancy based on the report of the medical board.
The minor is 11 years old and 23 weeks pregnant. According to laws, a pregnancy cannot be terminated if the pregnancy crosses 20 weeks. As the period has passed in the particular case, the girl’s parents had approached the Calcutta High Court seeking permission for termination of pregnancy.
The minor was gang-raped and then got became pregnant. Her parents came to know about the pregnancy only after the symptoms of pregnancy became evident. Thereafter, they informed the local police who arrested three accused individuals, who were also minors.
