Peeved at the state governments inability to provide land for building battalion headquarters, the BSF today said it would wait for another month before taking a decision on dropping the proposal itself.
We have had several meetings with the government officials regarding this project. Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra had said the government is waiting for the panchayat polls to get over. Since he has promised now,we will have to wait, BSF Special Director General (East) B D Sharma told The Indian Express.
About a year ago,the BSF had sought 70 acres to construct 10 battalion headquarters in several districts, namely North 24-Parganas,South 24-Parganas,Malda,North Dinajpur,Murshidabad and Nadia among others.
We told them our proposal is flexible and that we can do even with a smaller plots. But nothing has happened so far, Sharma said.
The matter also came up when Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami visited Kolkata and met the top brass of both the state administration and the BSF.
Officials at the Department of Land and Land Reforms said the BSF perhaps would never get the land so long as the state government continued with its policy of putting land acquisition on hold even of one person opposed it.
We couldnt respond to BSFs request because acquisition was not possible anywhere. Someone or the other would raise objection, halting the process. The BSF case isnt an exception. It has happened in areas of infrastructure, too. The DMs in all these cases are told not to go ahead (with the acquisition), an official of the land and land reforms department told The Indian Express.
