Among the 5 lakh candidates to take the teacher recruitment exam in West Bengal is Abdus Sattar, who is facing trial in a POCSO case. Sattar, who has been issued admit cards for both the September 7 and September 15 recruitment exams, will take the exam paper from Bolpur jail.
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday permitted him to appear for the examination from jail. Giving the permission, Justice Amrita Sinha ordered the authorities to take steps “so that no difficulty is caused at the time of the examination”.
Sattar’s counsel said that he is a “qualified” teacher and his name is not among the 1,806 “tainted candidates”.
“He was eligible to sit for the exam as per the Supreme Court’s order, but the WBSSC was not giving permission. Therefore, he moved the Calcutta High Court seeking permission to sit for the exam,” his counsel said.
According to sources, Sattar had cleared the SSC exam in 2016 and got a job as a secondary-level history teacher.
“He was falsely implicated in a POCSO case in 2024 with the help of a local TMC leader. We moved for bail, but the plea was rejected by the court. Sattar’s examination centre was at Bidhannagar College in North 24 Parganas. Being in jail and not able to secure bail, Sattar moved the Calcutta High Court to take the exam.
