Against Basu,Left to strike on Feb 28

Almost throwing a challenge at state labour minister Purnendu Basu - who has ruffled feathers of the state government employees’ unions by threatening to withdraw the “full trade union rights” given to them during the Left regime - the CPM controlled state coordination committee has called a strike in all government offices on February 28.

Almost throwing a challenge at state labour minister Purnendu Basu – who has ruffled feathers of the state government employees’ unions by threatening to withdraw the “full trade union rights” given to them during the Left regime – the CPM controlled state coordination committee has called a strike in all government offices on February 28.

“We have decided to call a strike in all government offices on February 28. The decision was taken to express solidarity with the trade unions which have jointly called a strike on the same day in protest against anti-people policies of the Centre. We will join them because employees’ rights and future are at stake due to wrong policy of the Centre,” Ananta Banerjee, general secretary, state coordination committee, said, addressing a press conference at Writers’ Buildings on Monday.

The announcement was made shortly after Basu told reporters at his office that the government would conduct “counselling” of its staff to make them aware of their rights given by the West Bengal Service Rules.

“The state government is out to snatch away the rights the employees had earned after a prolonged struggle. Even during the Left regime,we had called strike 13 times. We decided to extend our support to the strike called by the central trade unions because the Centre has decided on many policies that would hurt the interest of the employees and pensioners. We will join the strike in protest against Pension Bill. We are against recruitment on contractual basis too,” Banerjee said.

When asked to comment on Basu’s idea of counselling of the state government employees,Sukamal Sen,another senior coordination committee leader, said,“Only a person with a history of mental illness requires counselling.
