Visiting the Adyapeath temple in Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recalled her mother’s 2009 visit to the temple and how a simple cotton saree that she had sent through her family ended up being wrapped around the goddess by the priests rather than the expensive drapes that are usually offered by devotees.

She was accompanied by Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra and TMC general secretary and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee’s mother Lata. The CM puja at the temple and performed aarti.

Recalling a 2009 incident when her mother and sister visited the Adyapeath temple when she was the Railways Minister, the CM said, “I came to Adaypeath with a purpose – to remember my mother. No one knows about this incident from 2009 when I was the Railways Minister, my mother and younger sister came to Adyapeath. I bought a cotton saree and asked my mother to offer it during the puja… When the priests asked if they had brought clothes, my mother told them yes. But, no one expected a simple cotton saree. Usually people offer expensive silk sarees to the goddess… At first, the priests did not want to take the saree because… but that day no one came with another saree. So, they draped a simple cotton saree,” said the CM. “The incident still gives me a goosebumps…Many may say it is drama but I love my mother from the bottom of my heart and I don’t need to do politics with her name,” she added.

The CM said that she reads ‘Adyastap’ every day. “She (Lata) lives with me…Whenever I go to a religious place I take Lata along,” Mamata said. Interestingly, it was the first time that the CM mentioned Lata Banerjee in a speech.
