The Calcutta High Court granted conditional bail to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jitendra Tiwari on Monday, weeks after he was arrested in connection with the 2022 Asansol stampede case which occurred while he was serving as the mayor of the district.

Tiwari was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 by a division bench led by Justice Joymala Bagchi.

As per the high court order, Tiwari cannot enter the Asansol Municipal Corporation area and has to appear before the police every week. On March 18, Tiwari was arrested by Asansol Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida area in connection with the stampede that took place amidst a blanket distribution programme and led to the death of three people.

Tiwari, was booked under IPC sections 304(2) (causing death by negligence), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

A former Trinamool Congress MLA, Tiwari joined the BJP before the 2021 Assembly elections in Bengal. His wife, Chaitali Tiwari, who is currently a councillor in Asansol, had also joined BJP along with Jitendra.

On December 14 2022, a stampede took place during a blanket distribution ceremony that was organised by Tiwari’s wife Chaitali Tiwari. BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, was also present at the event. The stampede took place reportedly after Adhikari left the dais, leaving three persons dead and five others injured. The victims were mostly women and children. Police had then said that the BJP leaders did not take the required permission to hold the event.
