Gujarat govt to bear additional fees of tribal scholarship students

In a significant move aimed at the welfare of tribal communities in Gujarat, the state government Wednesday announced that it will bear the additional cost in courses where the fees are above the scholarship being offered by the Central government under the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities.

The announcement was made by Tribal Development Minister Kuber Dindor in an official release Wednesday.

The release stated that as per Central government’s guidelines on the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for ST communities, scholarships are being given for various courses at government-approved institutes. The scholarship requires that the annual income of the parents of these students should not be above Rs 2.50 lakh.

The scholarship for MBBS/MD/MS courses is Rs 6 lakh, that of engineering courses is Rs 2.50 lakh and Rs 1 lakh for other courses.

Now, according to the state government, if the fees in these categories and courses are above the scholarship being offered by the Central government, then the remainder will be paid by the state government as a scholarship.

A tribal development department official stated that the benefits of the decision will be available to students who study in government-approved educational institutes.
