A 75-year-old yoga teacher accused of raping his student repeatedly on the pretext of marrying her was acquitted after the woman turned hostile in court.
During cross-examination,the woman deposed that the man had not raped her and that it was at the instance of another woman that she had filed the complaint. But she said she could not produce this woman in court. She also told the court that she did not know the name of the man who was accused of raping her.
No man accused of rape can be convicted if the witnesses do not support the prosecution case or give quality evidence,as in the present case where the prosecutrix is hostile…, ASJ Nivedita Anil Sharma said.
According to the womans complaint,she and her father had gone to the yoga teacher to learn meditation. They stayed at his house and the teacher allegedly spiked her drink and raped her. The woman alleged that he continued to rape her over a period of time on the pretext of marrying her. She also claimed that he threatened to kill her if she disclosed this to anyone.
