An officer said the exchange of fire occurred during an operation to curb illegal cow slaughter in the region. “Haseen was a repeat offender wanted in several serious cases, including cow slaughter, attempt to murder, and those registered under the Gangster Act,” the officer added.
Kunwar Gyananjay Singh, Superintendent of Police (SP), Hapur, said that around 12.30 am, the Kapoorpur police received information through the 112 helpline that some people, suspected to be cow smugglers, were arranging for the transportation of the animals.
“Acting on this information, the Station House Officer (SHO) Vinod Pandey reached the location and began to follow a SwiftDzire car, which he found to be moving suspiciously. The man inside the car opened fire at him, and the SHO fired in retaliation to save his life when Haseen was injured,” said the SP.
“As soon as the car’s occupants realised that they were trapped, Haseen opened fire at the police team, aiming directly at SHO Pandey. The officer narrowly escaped as the bullet whizzed past his head. The situation quickly escalated into a heavy exchange of gunfire,” the officer stated.
Haseen sustained gunshot injuries and collapsed near the vehicle, the police said. “He was immediately taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Dhaulana, and later referred to Rama Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” the SP added.
