An 11-month-old child is suspected to have drowned after he fell from his mother’s arms while she was walking on a pipeline above an 8-foot-deep drain, in north Delhi’s Wazirabad on Friday morning, police said. The woman, Pooja, was on her way to Shukar market on the other side when the incident took place.
Police said Pooja slipped and her son, Krishna, fell into the drain. Police was informed about the incident, following which a team from the local police station was dispatched to the spot.
According to locals, the pipeline is a shorter route to cross over to the other side.
“There are no foot overbridges connecting Wazirabad village to the Outer Ring Road. Instead of taking a long route or spending money on transportation, most people use the pipeline. Even elderly people and women with children cross the pipeline,” said Rinku, a local resident.
In her statement to police, Pooja said, “I was shopping for bangles for Karva Chauth, and took my son along with me. I, along with everyone else, use the pipeline to get to the other side. On Friday, however, I lost my balance and my son fell into the drain.”
DCP (north) Nupur Prasad said, “The locals use the pipeline as a shortcut. When the call was made, a team of divers was sent… officials from the Delhi fire services and DDMA are also trying to trace the boy.”
