Volunteer booked for ‘molesting’ woman at Dhirendra Shastri’s Noida event after video goes viral

Officials said disciplinary action is also being taken against a policeman over negligence. The woman has been identified and will record her statement before the police on Sunday.

Gautam Buddha Nagar police registered a case of molestation against an unidentified sewadaar or volunteer at a mega event of Bageshwar Dham’s Dhirendra Shastri in Noida on Thursday. The action came after a viral video, purportedly from the event, showed a man throwing a woman over a railing in the presence of police personnel.

Officials said disciplinary action is also being taken against a policeman, who was on duty at the time, over negligence. Self-styled godman Dhirendra Shatstri’s programme is currently underway at a ground in the Surajpur police station area.

The woman has been identified, an official said, adding, “She will come today to the police station to record her statement. We are also trying to identify the accused. Today (Sunday) is the last day of Dhirendra Shastri’s programme. After that we will focus on solving this case.”

The FIR in this regard was registered on the basis of a complaint by Sub-Inspector Krishna Kumar Yadav. It said, “On July 12, the ‘Divya Darbaar’ of Baba Bageshwar Dhirendra Shastri was taking place. Meanwhile, a volunteer (sewaadar) lifted a woman in his lap and threw her on the other side of the barricade. I came to know about this through social media. It is clear from the video viral on social media that the said volunteer is carelessly throwing the woman… due to which… (she) got hurt.”

“Due to this act, the woman’s modesty has been outraged. Along with this, due to carelessly throwing the woman, there was a danger to her life and personal well-being…” it added.

The case was registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 354 (assault of criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) at Surajpur police station.
