Three men, accused of robbing people after inviting them on dates, were arrested after a brief exchange of gunfire in the Usmanpur area on Sunday, the Delhi Police said. Two of them were injured in the incident, they stated, adding that pistols and live cartridges were seized from the suspects.
Officers identified the suspects as Sameer, 21, Tarun, 23, and Kunal, 23. Sameer and Tarun sustained injuries during the retaliatory firing.
According to the police, the patrolling team of New Usmanpur police station got a tip-off that the accused were spotted in the area. “At about 2.25 am, a police team, comprising Sub-Inspector Udit Jain, Constable Honey, and Constable Rahul, was on patrol duty when it received a tip-off regarding the presence of individuals involved in recent robberies. They were allegedly planning another crime near 5th Pustha Road,” said Ashish Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Northeast Delhi.
The team soon reached the Yamuna Khadar area where they spotted three suspicious individuals. The accused tried to run towards the forest area. “When the police team instructed them to stop for checking, the suspects opened fire in an attempt to escape,” DCP Mishra said.
The police allegedly fired back in self-defence. “The team successfully overpowered the three suspects. Two country-made pistols and three live cartridges were recovered from their possession. During the exchange of fire, two of the suspects sustained bullet injuries to their legs,” the DCP said.
“On detailed investigation, it came to the fore that the accused used to lure people through online dating apps and rob them when they arrived,” he added. Sameer, officer said, has been named in two other cases, including one involving robbery, at Mansarovar police station.
