BJP maintained its grip on the North Municipal Corporation as councillor Yogendra Chandolia was elected the Mayor on Monday amid cheers of “acche din aane wale hain”.
This year, both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor Ravinder Gupta were elected unopposed as the Congress did not field any candidates for both positions. The opposition also stayed away from participating in the meeting.
Congress leaders had earlier stated that they had not filed any nominations due to the steep difference in the number of seats. However, the East and South Delhi Municipal Corporations will elect their office-bearers on Tuesday (April 29), where the Congress has filed nominations for the posts despite BJP’s majority.
According to the rules of the municipal corporation, in the third year of the corporation, the post is reserved for the SC category.
Spelling out his priorities for the next year, Chandolia said his priority would be to remain proactive in dealing with the problem of water-logging during monsoon.
Blaming the Sheila Dikshit government for the state of affairs within the corporation, Chandolia said, “We were lagging behind because of non-cooperation within the Delhi government. But hopefully, that will change when the BJP comes to power at the Centre as well as in Delhi,” he said.
He said the corporation had faced “immense difficulty” in working with the Congress and suffered from shortage of funds.
“But now, we are looking forward to the wave of change in the country,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Gupta said his priority would be to make Delhi corruption-free.
Chandolia was the chairman of the Standing Committee of the North Corporation before he took up the office of the Mayor. He said in his personal view, the civic body functioned better when all three corporations were unified.
“I will take up the unification of the corporations with the BJP senior leadership as stated in the BJP manifesto,” he said.
Outgoing Mayor Azad Singh too stated that the North corporation could not implement many of its policies because of a lack of coordination between the civic body and the Sheila Dikshit government.
Besides the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Rekha Gupta and Dr Sanjeev Nayyar of the BJP and Prithvi Singh Rathore of Congress were elected unanimously as the members of the Standing Committee of the House.
According to rules, new office bearers are elected for a period of one year in the first meeting of the House held in April.
