An undertrial prisoner on one-day police remand in a robbery case briefly escaped from custody on Friday afternoon from the Amar Colony police station in Southeast Delhi, police said. Meharban, 23, was arrested a day later from the Sarita Vihar area in possession of a country-made pistol and live cartridges following a massive search operation.
During the operation, CCTV footage of the possible routes were checked and manual inputs were developed. Several raids were conducted at the possible hideouts of the absconding accused.

Meharban’s close friend Junaid alias Shooter was interrogated and he told the police that the accused came to his rented house around 6 pm on Friday evening, borrowed Rs 2,000 and left his house by 8 pm. He further disclosed that he received a phone call from Meharban on Saturday morning and was informed that he was hiding in Okhla Phase II.
Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast Delhi), said, “The ownership detail of the number led us to a resident of Sanjay Colony in Okhla Phase II who said that three of his mobile phones were stolen by a person from his house around 10 am on Saturday.”
Local secret informers in the Okhla industrial area were informed about the absconding accused. The police team received specific manual input about Meharban’s presence, promptly laid a trap in Sarita Vihar, and arrested him.
Police officials said Meharban, who had been lodged in Tihar Jail, managed to flee from the lockup when brought to the Amar Colony station for questioning. The escape occurred while five other accused were being taken out of the station for court proceedings, the police added.
The police said the light went off at the same time, helping the accused escape.
