Two X-ray tests and ultrasounds later, a 34-year-old man is yet to cough up a pair of gold earrings that he had allegedly snatched from a woman and swallowed.
The incident took place Thursday around 10 pm in Northeast Delhi’s Brahampuri. Phoolan Devi, a housewife, was returning home when the accused, Nasir, came on his bike and snatched her gold earrings, weighing four grams, from her ears.
Police had said that Devi immediately sought help from a bystander on a bike and they chased Nasir. “Nasir also tried to snatch her purse at this time but she resisted… he was eventually caught,” said a police officer.
However, within a few seconds, the woman claimed, Nasir swallowed the earrings in full public view. “We arrested the accused and made him undergo X-rays and ultrasounds at a government hospital twice… no sign of any earring has come out in the report so far,” said the officer.
The officer added, “… we are still exploring all options and have given him laxatives so that he can pass out the earrings… nothing has been recovered yet.”
During questioning, however, Nasir claimed he did not swallow the earrings and threw them on the road when he was caught. “We have deployed teams to look for the earrings… it is possible someone may have picked it up… we have questioned other eyewitnesses at the spot also and they too claimed that the accused swallowed the gold earrings,” the officer said.
Police said Nasir, a resident of Old Mustafabad, has around eight cases, including those of robbery, Arms Act, and snatching, registered against him.
Another senior officer said, “In cases where the snatcher is caught, they often try to fool the victim by claiming they have swallowed the stolen item. They instead throw it at a particular spot, which is thereafter collected by their accomplice… Nasir has been involved in similar such cases in the past too.”
