Sarojini Nagar, Sarojini Nagar sewer death, Pillanji village, sewer construction site death, delhi news, India news, Indian express, current affairsPolice said an FIR has been lodged under BNS Section 106 (whoever causes death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) against unknown persons.

On Tuesday morning, two labourers entered an unused sewer at a construction site in Southwest Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar Tuesday to clear out the garbage, said police, but fell unconscious. Seeing this, a third worker jumped in to rescue them. However, he and another worker died allegedly due to inhaling poisonous gas, said police.

A senior police officer said an earthmover had to be brought to the site and officials deployed to dig the ground next to the sewer and make a hole big enough for a person to squeeze through. Through this, the three men were pulled out, he said.

According to DCP (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary, on October 8, a PCR call was received at Sarojini Nagar police station from Pillanji village, near Metro gate number 1, that three-four persons were trapped inside a sewer. “Following this, the SHO and a team rushed to the spot, which was an NBCC construction site, and found that two labourers — Babundra Kumar Singh (29) and Shrinath Soren (28) — were removing garbage from the sewer which was not in use and fell unconscious while cleaning it.

“To rescue them, another labourer, Ramasre, 41, also entered the sewer line. The men were pulled out. Ramasre was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre

in the police’s Emergency Response Vehicle,” said the DCP.

Babundra, a resident of Bihar, and Shrinath from West Bengal, were shifted to a hospital in an ambulance, police said.

Police said Ramasre and Babundra died at the hospital while Shrinath was undergoing treatment. A case has been lodged and Ramasre’s postmortem was carried out on Wednesday at the AIIMS mortuary.

When contacted, the NBCC PRO did not respond.

Babundra’s brother, Hardesh Kumar, said he had been working at the site for the last four years. He said Babundra used to stay with his pregnant wife and one-year-old daughter at a jhuggi near the site.  “I came to the spot after the incident… Babundra would not have died had there been adequate safety equipment… the construction company did not provide him or the other workers with safety gear…,” he alleged.

“Police registered an FIR and we have communicated our grievance regarding the lack of proper safety kits for the workers,” he said.

Police said an FIR has been lodged under BNS Section 106 (whoever causes death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) against unknown persons.
