Ten tonnes of red sandalwood worth Rs 6 crore were seized and two interstate smugglers arrested in the national capital’s Tughlakabad village in a joint operation by Delhi Police’s special task force, Andhra Pradesh’s red sanders anti-smuggling task force (RSASTF), and an intelligence team of Andhra Pradesh Police on Monday.

“The sandalwood was being smuggled from Tirupati to Delhi. During this operation, they recovered about 9,500 kg of red sanders that had been illegally smuggled from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, to Delhi,” said Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Southeast Delhi.

In August, an FIR was registered at the Tirupati police station concerning the theft of red sandalwood. The Andhra Pradesh police then made arrests in the case and learnt that the logs were being transported to Delhi.

Acting on information provided by the RSASTF, a joint police team was formed. The team gathered intelligence and
conducted a raid, leading to the arrest of the accused on Monday. Following their interrogation, the joint team raided a godown in Tughlakabad and recovered 10 tonnes of red sandalwood.

The accused had illegally acquired the red sandalwood logs from Andhra Pradesh in the first week of August and concealed them in a truck to bring them to Delhi, according to the police.

“On sustained interrogation, the accused admitted they were planning to smuggle the logs to China and South Asian countries, where red sandalwood is highly valued for its medicinal properties. Further investigation is in progress to uncover their other links,” the DCP added.
