Truck mows down man ‘fleeing’ police

He was run over by a construction site truck after escaping from custody,police said.

A 25-year-old national from Nepal — who was arrested on Friday from West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden after a businessman,who found his movements suspicious,called police — died moments later. He was run over by a construction site truck after escaping from custody,police said.

Three policemen accompanying the man have been sent to the district lines for negligence of duty and a departmental inquiry has been ordered against them for failing to guard the man.

Police said Ravi had been apprehended on September 20 after a businessman,outside whose house he was allegedly loitering,called police and complained that his movements seemed suspicious.

Police said other residents in the area later told them that it appeared that Ravi wanted to steal vehicles.

Three policemen — ASI Abhinandan,constable Kuldeep and another constable — reached the spot and took Ravi in custody.

The officers were on two motorcycles. Police said Kuldeep was riding one motorcycle with Ravi in and Abhinandan riding pillion. The third constable was on the other motorcycle. They were going to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital to get Ravi medically examined under rules.

Around 9 am,they reached the hospital. Near the entrance,Ravi allegedly jumped off the motorcycle and tried to flee,police said. But he had barely crossed a road when a truck mowed him down,police said.

The driver of the truck,Nafis Singh,has been arrested and the vehicle impounded,police said.
