After completing the training of of its own 1,000 gardeners, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is ready to start training 1,100 gardeners who work for the citys three municipal corporations.
According to NDMC,the gardeners will be trained in use of modern techniques of sowing, cultivation and planting. The training will be held in NDMCs gardening school, which started last year.
Earlier, there was a plan to open the gardening school to the public, but the NDMC felt teaching smaller batches would not be financially viable.
However, officials said if a large batch approaches them, the council will provide them training at a nominal charge.
We received a request from the Horticulture department of the corporations asking us to train their gardeners. We have agreed and we have our schedule ready for the training, an NDMC official said.
The agency will be charging a nominal amount for transportation and food that will be made available during training. The council has even called in experts from the Indian Agriculture Research Institute and National Botanical Research Institute.
According to officials, the trainers will brief the gardeners on recent techniques that are required in weed collection, preparation of bed, sowing, cultivation, planting, maintenance of plants and plant protection.
The toughest part is how to maintain trees that do not grow in Delhi weather. Even the trees that can prosper in Delhi face trouble. Many gardeners in government offices lack such knowledge. And that is why we thought formal training would help us keep our parks and streets green, a senior official in the Horticulture department of the municipal corporation said.
