As four-day Chhath Puja celebrations kicked off on Saturday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said it has allocated Rs 40,000 per ward to step up lighting arrangements at the ghats where devotees offer prayers. The Capital has a total of 250 wards.
Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, while inspecting Chhath Ghats in Shalimar Bagh and Pitampura, said that the initiative aims to ensure that the devotees, especially women and children, feel safe and comfortable during the evening and night prayers.
Emphasising upon the “robust arrangements for cleanliness, lighting, fogging, drainage, and waste management at all ghats,” he urged the devotees to avoid use of plastic during celebrations and cooperate with the MCD in maintaining cleanliness at the ghats.
“Special sanitation teams are being deployed to maintain cleanliness and ensure uninterrupted garbage collection so that devotees do not face any inconvenience,” he said, adding that all MCD councillors are reviewing Chhath preparations in their respective wards.
Chairman of the Education Committee Yogesh Verma, and Zonal Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kumar, among other senior officials of the Corporation were also present during the inspection.
Singh also mentioned that unprecedented arrangements are being made for the celebration of Chhath Mahaparv this year under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. “Chhath Mahaparv is not only a symbol of religious faith but also represents our cultural diversity, social unity, and communal harmony,” he said.
