In order to attract tourism and increase its revenue, the Delhi Tourism department is planning to develop two new coffee homes — in East Delhi’s IP Extension and West Delhi’s Janakpuri. Besides, plans are afoot to upgrade other properties that come under Delhi Tourism such as Dilli Haat, Azad Hind Gram, and GTB memorial at Singhu Border, officials said.

According to a tourism department official, the department has been allotted two vacant plots for the coffee homes at IP Extension, Patparganj, and Janakpuri’s Narang Colony.

“Currently, one of the oldest and most famous coffee houses run by the tourism department is located at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Connaught Place. The place is known for its cheap and delicious coffee and south Indian delicacies…So, a few months ago, a plan was proposed to set up two more coffee homes in East Delhi and Janakpuri,” said an official.

At IP Extension, the coffee house will be set up on a land measuring 1,000 square metre while the size of land at Janakpuri is 1,550 sqm, said officials.

The land has been allotted by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to the DTTDC on lease basis for the coffee homes, said officials.

Officials said that the coffee homes will give the patrons an affordable option to spend their time. Apart from freshly brewed filter coffee, snacks such as dosa, upma, idli, burger, cutlet and noodles etc are part of the plan.

Besides, there is a plan to have an outdoor seating arrangement where visitors can sit and enjoy their coffee and meal, said an official.

DTTDC also plans on upgrading Dilli Haat in Janakpuri and Pitampura, Guru Teg Bahadur Memorial at Singhu Border, and Azad Hind Gram at Tikri Kalan, NH-10.

“Tender was invited to hold public consultations with companies, agencies and organisations that have good experience of developing, operating tourist facilities/related services for the purpose of inviting meaningful suggestions to develop the above properties with the twofold objective of providing good tourism services to the public and revenue generation for DTTDC…However, initially, no bidders turned for the project,” said an official.

An official said the department is working on the plan and soon a re-tendering process will be initiated for developing the properties.

The department will shortlist the agencies after screening the details provided by the bidders, following which the selection will take place, the official added.
