Three members of a gang of snatchers, reportedly inspired by Bollywood film Dhoom, were arrested by Southeast District police,in Amar Colony on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Sonu,Kartar Singh and Gopal Singh, were allegedly involved in cases of robbery, snatching and theft. The gang members reportedly attached a nitrous oxide cylinder to their bikes, which often helped them escape after committing crimes. The chemical is used to boost the speed of vehicles for a short duration. The gang had earlier evaded police several times by speeding off on their bikes.

The gang was busted, when two of the accused left their hideout early in the morning to give their bikes for servicing. On March 13,around 5 am,policemen flagged the bikers at a barricade near Capt Gaur Marg. During checking,it was found that the registration number of the bike was not legible. They tried to escape, but were overpowered, police said. According to sources, after Sonu and Kartar were arrested from the picket, police asked Sonu to call their third associate and tell him that he met with an accident and was admitted to hospital. Sonu was asked to tell Gopal that he left the bike outside PGDAV College and that he should pick it up from there. Gopal took the bait, and was arrested outside PGDAV college.

Additional Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhary said: “Sonu and Kartar disclosed that they were involved in over 22 cases of snatching, robbery and theft in various districts. We have recovered 10 gold chains four motorcycles from their possession .”

The accused have also disclosed the names of other associates and teams have been formed to arrest them,he said.

Sonu used to work as a mechanic at a bike workshop. Inspired by Dhoom,he decided to use high-end motorcycles for robbery, police said.
