Delhi Police’s Crime Branch arrested three men on Friday for impersonating police personnel to rob a jewellery workshop in Farsh Bazaar, officers said on Monday. According to the police, the accused misled the workers at the workshop and fled with Rs 20 lakh in cash and 1.4 kg of gold.

On September 17, police arrested Vikas Keder (30), an employee of the victim’s workshop, from Jaipur. During questioning, he admitted to orchestrating the crime along with two associates from Maharashtra, police said.

On September 19, an overnight raid was conducted in Sangli with assistance from the local crime branch, leading to the arrest of Prashant Raj Kumar Kadam (25) and Shubham Raja Ram Kamble (25). Police recovered Rs 11.91 lakh in cash, 1.4 kg of gold, 2.8 kg of silver, and two mobile phones from the accused.

“During questioning, accused Prashant disclosed that Jeevan and Vikas are his friends, whom he met about three years ago at a blood donation camp in Sangli. Around 15 to 20 days before the incident, Vikas, along with his colleague, Jeevan, contacted Prashant and proposed a plan to commit robbery at their employer’s jewellery store in Delhi. They suggested impersonating police personnel to avoid resistance from the staff. To execute the plan, Prashant roped in his friend Shubham,” explained DCP Crime Branch Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

On the day of the robbery, Prashant and Shubham travelled from Sangli to Delhi, waited near the shop as per Vikas’s instructions, and struck when the owner left for lunch, police said. “After the heist, they escaped with Vikas to Uttam Nagar, took a taxi to Jaipur, and later parted ways. Vikas stayed behind in Jaipur and falsely claimed to have been kidnapped by the perpetrators to mislead the police,” police added.

On the motive, police said, Vikas was motivated by financial distress and the need for money to fund his father’s medical treatment.
Following the incident, an FIR was registered at Farsh Bazaar police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 140(3) (kidnapping), 204 (personating a public servant), 309(4) (robbery), 319(2) (cheating by personation), and 3(5) (common intent).

Police are yet to ascertain Jeevan’s involvement in the crime, officers said.
