This 16-year-old boys troubles began when he set out to rob a medical store at 2 am on Thursday. It ended with him falling into a pit,screaming for help and,eventually,the police pulling him out to save his life.
Police said the boy had broken into the medical store in a southeast Delhi colony with the intention of robbing it. But when locals gathered around the shop,he tried to flee. As he ran,he fell into a pit dug in the basement of the shop,police said.
Raman Goel,owner of the medical store,said the guard in the market called him around 3 am,saying a thief had entered his shop. He told me the thief had broken open the shutter and the glass of the store. I told him to gather the locals till I reached there, he said.
By the time Goel reached the store,the guard had managed to trap the thief inside by pulling down the shutter. The guard also informed police and gathered the residents, Goel said. To our surprise,when we went inside,we found no one there, he said.
Goel,the residents and police began to search the shop and the basement. Just as they were wondering how the thief had managed to escape,they heard a cry for help. Bachao Bachao.
It was coming from a pit that Goel had dug in his basement to drain out rain water. We rushed to the pit and saw a person stuck horizontally in the pit. We could see his leg and back. It was the thief we had been looking for , Goel said.
The next two hours were taken up in a rescue operation. We had to dig around the pit to widen it and pull the boy out. It took a lot of effort,but we managed to pull him out, Goel said.
The juvenile was quick to thank his rescuers,police said. He was given a glass of water and sent to a juvenile home.
