The two hours when clashes erupted in Bharat Nagar Sunday was a “horrific nightmare”, said Asim Ahmed as his two-storey house in Block B was nearly torched by the mob .

“They were carrying talwars and cans filled with petrol in their hands. My wife and children started shouting on seeing them. We immediately bolted the door but they kept trying to get inside,” said Ahmed, a businessman.

“I made four PCR calls but no policemen turned up to help. They threw some petrol on the walls and tried to set it on fire. Two motorcycles parked in front of my house were also torched. They left after an hour,” he added.

Ahmed’s parents, Yasin and Jannat, are still in shock. “This is the first time this has happened. I have been living here for the past 40 years. Such a thing has never happened until now. We are afraid,” said Yasin.
