Deepak Yadav had not slept for two nights leading up to the murder of his daughter, Radhika.
Police said he was “disturbed” by the fact that she was earning an income and, upset by “taunts” from local residents over this, he allegedly decided to kill her.
On July 10, Radhika (25), was cooking at the family home in Gurgaon’s Sushant Lok Phase 2 when her father allegedly shot her dead. He allegedly fired four bullets into her body using his licensed pistol and later admitted to the crime.
“He practiced aiming his gun before the shooting — including on the morning of July 10,” an officer said.
These details find a mention in the chargesheet filed by the Gurgaon Police in the murder case of the state-level tennis player. The 450-page chargesheet was filed in a city court on Wednesday.
“The chargesheet mentions accounts of 33 prosecution witnesses, which includes some of the family’s neighbours (in Sushant Lok and Wazirabad) and experts in the field of forensic. They will depose at trial,” a Gurgaon Police spokesperson said.
Deepak’s lawyer, Shyambir Singh, said the hearing on the chargesheet is scheduled for October 17. “We are yet to receive a copy of the chargesheet. I will be able to comment only after reviewing it,” he added.
According to police, Deepak and Radhika had frequent arguments. “He would ask her to stop going out and teaching… He felt frustrated whenever anyone asked him about his daughter’s work as a coach,” the officer said.
Police said Deepak had initially supported Radhika — he used to accompany her to several tennis competitions across the country.
In the chargesheet, police clarified that there was no angle of a love affair involved. “It was solely a matter of family honour that led to the killing of Radhika Yadav,” the officer said. Some of the forensic examinations reports have come while others are awaited, the officer added.
Born on March 23, 2000, Radhika was an emerging tennis player from Haryana. She had competed in various national and international tournaments, achieving a career-best ranking of 75 in Girls Under-18, 53 in Women’s Doubles, and 35 in Women’s Singles as per All India Tennis Association (AITA) records.
According to sources, she used to train children at various academies, including one situated a few metres away from her home and another in Sector 61.
