A 13-year-old boy on a bicycle was crushed to death after a Mahindra Thar ran over him — twice — in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Thursday, the Delhi Police said. The driver is absconding.
The boy was identified as Murshid, a student of Class 8, who lived in a jhuggi in Sector C in Vasant Kunj.
Police said the incident took place at the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur road — a few metres away from the lane where Murshid lived — opposite an Indian Oil petrol pump. The jhuggis, in cramped lanes, line either side of the petrol pump.
“Murshid had just returned from school after an exam. Around 4.30 pm, he took his friend’s bicycle and went out to buy some snacks when the Thar driver rammed into him from behind. Trying to flee, he reversed the SUV and ran over the child and his cycle again,” a police officer said.
A couple of children who were with Murshid ran to his mother, Johana, who then took her son to the hospital in an auto rickshaw. He was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctors, police said.
Murshid’s cycle was completely mangled.
Hailing from Arrah district in Bihar, Johana (35) is a single mother to Murshid and his 18-year-old sister; her husband left the family years ago.
A police officer said she shifted to the jhuggi in 2001. One by one, Johana bought multiple jhuggis in the area and rented out each one at Rs 5,000 a month.
The rent remains the family’s main source of income. Murshid did a few odd jobs; he worked as a helper at a sweet shop to earn additional pocket money.
Police said that the accused driving the Black Mahindra Thar has not yet been traced and investigators are on the lookout for the accused using CCTV footage from the area.
