The Supreme Court Thursday allowed Ansal Theaters and Clubotels Private Ltd to approach the trial court for de-sealing the Uphaar Cinema, where a fire had claimed 59 lives in 1997.

A bench of Justices KM Joseph, BV Nagarathna and Ahsanuddin Amanullah asked the trial court to decide the application if moved within ten weeks, as per law.

Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal, who were convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, were the former directors of Ansal Theaters and Clubotels Private Ltd.

The counsel appearing for Delhi Police and CBI informed the court that they had no claim over the property and that the appropriate forum to consider the plea for de-sealing is the trial court.

The court noted that the trial was over and the brothers had paid the fine of Rs 30 crore each imposed by the SC in 2015.
