Delhi Police has received complaints of two separate incidents of stray dogs being allegedly killed and set on fire in Northwest Delhi’s Keshav Puram, officers said on Tuesday.
According to the complainant, the incidents occurred 3 km apart in the past three weeks. Police said they have received the complaints and are further probing the matter.
Advocate Parvinder Kaur, who is also an animal rights activist, alleged that police did not register any FIR.
Kaur, who lives in Keshavpuram, told The Indian Express, “The first incident came to light on August 16, when we discovered mutilated parts of a few dogs near Keshav Puram Metro station. We immediately made a PCR call and also informed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Police and MCD staff arrived and removed the carcasses.”
On September 6, she said another brutal killing of a dog came to light. “In this incident, which occurred on Lawrence Road, somebody burnt the dog to death. We also recorded the video and filed a complaint with the police, but no action has been taken so far,” Kaur stated.
When the local police were contacted, an officer said a postmortem was conducted in the second case, and the report is awaited. The officer said no foul play was found in the first case, but they are still probing the matter.
Delhi saw multiple cases of face-offs between animal rights activists and the Delhi Police last month, after the Supreme Court directed civic authorities to shift stray dogs to shelter homes from the streets of Delhi and NCR.
Two weeks later, the apex court modified its order and directed the release of the dogs back to their local areas after sterilisation and vaccination.
