A 20-year-old man died on Sunday after he was stabbed by a group of teenagers, all minors, in the middle of a busy street in full public view in a locality in South Delhi Saturday night, police said.
The victim suffered at least four to six stab injuries on the chest as the eight boys punched him and stabbed him.
Delhi Police said they have apprehended the minors and are conducting an investigation in the case.
Police said the boys revealed during questioning that they were angry with Dilshad Akhtar for thrashing them over a minor issue last year.
Akhtar’s family members said the local residents didn’t intervene and instead shot photos and videos of the fight.
Delhi Police said they received a PCR call at 7.30 pm on Saturday from a hospital about the victim. Police said they found Akhtar with multiple stab wounds in the chest and abdomen.
CCTV footage of the incident uploaded on social media purportedly shows Akhtar being dragged by the minors. The boys then proceed to stab and thrash him in the presence of local residents and passersby.
According to Akhtar’s family, he climbed the stairs to his fourth-floor house on his own after nobody helped him or called the police.
Chandan Chowdhary, DCP (South), said, “The man had multiple stab injuries on the chest and other parts of the body. On Saturday, he was on the ventilator and was referred to Safdarjung Hospital. We registered a case of attempted murder. The man succumbed to the injuries on Sunday.”
“We received CCTV footage from the scene of the crime and identified all the eight accused. The boys have been caught and we have also recovered the weapon used during the offence,” she added.
During questioning, the minors said they had a fight with Akhtar last year during a local event where a DJ was playing songs. They alleged that Akhtar had beaten them up. “On Saturday evening, when the boys saw Akhtar in the area, they decided to attack him. They called their friends and accosted the man. He was badly beaten up and stabbed multiple times,” said an officer.
Akhtar is survived by his parents, elder brother and a sister. He used to work at his brother’s laptop repair shop in South Delhi. Rani, his sister, said, “He left home for some work. When he came back, we were all shocked. He was covered in blood and wasn’t able to say anything. We rushed him to the hospital. We later saw the CCTV footage. There were 10-15 boys who killed him.”
Masuda, his mother, alleged that nobody came to help her son and locals watched as the boys kept attacking him on the streets. She said Akhtar didn’t know the accused, adding he was targeted by “gangsters”.
