Nine members of a family in Southeast Delhi’s Badarpur area have been booked on charges of rioting after its members allegedly attacked a neighbour’s house using stones and bricks, and damaged their cars.

The police said the fight began over a petty issue but the accused soon resorted to rioting. The nine accused have been identified and a search is on to nab them, officers said.

According to the police, they received two calls from local residents about the rioting at 5.40 pm and 5.58 pm on Friday. Rajesh Deo, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) said, “Local officers and emergency response vehicle personnel rushed to the spot and found bricks, stones and sharp objects lying on the road. Two cars, both WagonRs, were damaged.”

Investigation revealed that a group of people headed by Shankey, 35, had some enmity with their neighbour Ashwani Kumar, 37, and his family, the police said. On Friday, Shankey called his family and friends to the spot and they attacked Ashwani’s home with bricks and stones, and damaged two cars with some sharp object.

“The assailants also attacked Ashwani’s cousin’s house in the same area and damaged its doors and windows. They went on to damage the CCTV cameras in the lane and managed to flee before the officers arrived,” the DCP added. A case has been registered on charges of rioting, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation and wrongful restraint.

The police said Shankey is a criminal and there are allegations that he is a bootlegger.
