Twenty-three-year-old Rohit Bhist had been living with his colleagues in a building housing rooms put on rent, for the past seven months. Every afternoon, the trio would go to the nearby Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj where Rohit worked as a chef and his friends did managerial gigs at Paul’s Patisserie.

Rohit was the sole breadwinner of a family of four. His father Yashwant Bhist, his mother and younger brother reside in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli village.

Around 2.30 am on Sunday, Rohit, Kapil and Lalit were standing near the bus stand opposite to the mall, all set to return to their rented accommodation. A few minutes later, a black Mercedes G- Wagon came charging towards the trio, hitting them before overturning on the pavement. The incident claimed Rohit’s life.

“His elder sister got married about a year ago. His father had taken loans for the wedding. To help his father pay off the debt, Rohit had come to Delhi, looking for jobs,” said Balwant Singh Bhist, Rohit’s uncle.

“He would earn about Rs 17,000 a month, and send most of it home. The situation had stabilised over the last few months. His brother just completed his school, and his parents were looking for a match for Rohit,” the uncle said.

Balwant, who works at a private firm and lives in Burari, was asleep when his brother Yashwant called him on Sunday morning. “I live in Burari. I got a call around 4 am. Yashwant said that Rohit had sustained injuries in an accident. When I reached the hospital, I learnt that he had passed away. I will take his body to Chamoli after they hand it over to me. I will have to face his parents,” he says.

Police said that while Lalit has been discharged, Kapil is still in the ICU, battling for his life.

From what is left at the site of the accident, one can figure out how badly the car had hit the three youths. While a part of the vehicle’s bonnet is lying near the bus stand, the plants around are damaged. Stone pillars near the divider where the car lost control and the pavement housing the bus stand show signs of damage as well. All the airbags of the car — currently parked at Vasant Kunj North police station covered in a black sheet — were blown out, while its rear windshield is completely shattered.
