A 43-year-old army official died after being hit by an Audi car in Delhi Cantonment area Wednesday, said police. The deceased, Ram Swaroop Rajput, was a Naik in Assam Regiment and was recently deployed in Haryana for mob control during the Jat agitation for quota, added the police.
The accident happened at about 10 am when Rajput was going to office on his bicycle, said a police officer. The car, being driven by Sarbjeet Singh, a senior official with a multinational company, rammed Rajput’s bicycle near Kirbi Palace traffic signal at about 10 am, added the officer.
According to the officer, Rajput was reportedly thrown in the air due to the impact and fell on the road. Army personnel rushed him to Base Hospital, where he died at about 1.30 pm. Rajput, who hailed from Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh, is survived by his wife and daughter.

Police arrested Singh, who told the police he was going for a condolence meet in Hari Nagar for a death in his family. His mother was in the car with him. He was later given bail.
Police have registered a case under sections of 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code against Singh.
“Rajput had returned to his unit after duty in Haryana, where he was part of a force instrumental in restoring law and order in riot-affected areas of Panipat and Hissar,” said a police officer.
