Snarls last for hours on NH-24, spill onto city roads

The tailbacks lasted several hours, continuing late into the night, as office-goers were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on their way home to Ghaziabad and East Delhi.

The protests by Shia Muslims on Monday triggered massive snarls on National Highway (NH)-24, a key link for commuters travelling from Ghaziabad and East Delhi to other parts of the national capital.

The tailbacks lasted several hours, continuing late into the night, as office-goers were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on their way home to Ghaziabad and East Delhi.

The snarls soon spilled into other arterial roads, affecting traffic movement in Anand Vihar, Seemapuri border, Ghazipur, Preet Vihar, Karkardooma,Patparganj, Vivek Vihar, Vikas Marg, Mathura Road, the C-Hexagon at India Gate, ITO, Aurobindo Marg, Jor Bagh, Mathura Road and Swami Dayanand Marg.

“The protesters stopped all vehicles on the Delhi-Ghaziabad border. As it is a busy stretch with hundreds of vehicles crossing into Uttar Pradesh from Delhi and vice-versa. There were huge snarls. It had a spiralling effect and the entire trans-Yamuna area, Central Delhi and Northeast Delhi were affected,” a police officer said.

“Commuters on their way to Ghaziabad were stranded for hours as the protesters refused to budge. It took us over five hours to clear the stretch. Normal traffic movement resumed late in the evening. It was a tough day for us,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, a protest was also held at Jor Bagh, where residents blocked roads, including Aurobindo Marg. They were, however, dispersed by police.
