She looked for her husband,wasn’t told he was dead

Dressed in a yellow and red salwar kameez,vermillion on her forehead and red and white bangles on her wrists,Lakhandass’s wife rushed through the corridors of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

She had heard the news of an accident on Rajpath-Janpath crossing involving IAF employees and seen the numberplate of her husband’s Maruti Omni van being flashed during the TV news bulletin. She repeatedly requested all Air Force employees present at the hospital to give her an update on her husband’s health.

“Woh theek hain na? Doctors ne abhi kuch kaha toh nahi hai? (Is he fine? Did the doctors say anything?),” she asked.

Her daughter,dressed in a checked skirt and blouse,sat by her mother’s side. Holding her hand. “My father was driving the car,” was all 13-year-old Pooja said.

Lakhandass,a Class IV employee with the Air Force unit at Dhansa More,had left his Dwarka home at 7 am on Sunday to go to Akshardham temple with his colleagues.

“We haven’t told them anything yet. If she breaks down,I won’t be able to handle her,” said Naveen Thakur,Lakhandass’s neighbour.

In another part of the hospital,SS Chakrwarti’s wife,Minakshi,lay on a stretcher. She had accompanied her husband on the trip. Chakrawarti died in the accident.

“She has also received head injuries. She still does not know about her husband’s death,” said her cousin Sandhya Dass.
