There has allegedly been a reduction in water coming from Haryana for the last several weeks, leading to Delhi getting 100 MGD less water now.

A day after a delegation of senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders met Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena over the shortage of water, several Delhi cabinet ministers Monday wrote a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to direct the Haryana government to release the national capital’s share.

“It has now become very important to get water from Haryana, otherwise there will be chaos in Delhi. Delhi needs its rightful 100 MGD water for which our Delhi Water Minister Atishi ji has been on fast since June 21. We request you to give priority to this problem and find a solution to this crisis as soon as possible,” read the letter.

The ministers said the total water supply in Delhi is 1,005 MGD (million gallons daily) and a major part of this, 613 MGD, comes from Haryana. There has allegedly been a reduction in water coming from Haryana for the last several weeks, leading to Delhi getting 100 MGD less water now.

“Due to severe heat this year, a huge water crisis has arisen in Delhi. The city has not witnessed such hot weather in the last decade, due to which, the people of Delhi are craving every drop of water,” they wrote.

“The Delhi government has made every possible effort to overcome the water shortage. Wrote a letter to the Haryana Chief Minister, and tried to meet the Union Water Minister; appealed to the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister for water. Himachal is ready to give additional water… which will come to Delhi from Haryana in Yamuna. But Haryana is refusing to give us that water also… The Supreme Court also accepted that there is a water crisis in Delhi… We have tried everything possible. Now tell me, what option do we have after all these efforts?” read the letter.

Meanwhile, Gopal Rai, the AAP Delhi convener, told the media that he has invited the Delhi L-G for a joint visit to the Wazirabad barrage on Tuesday. “We will take a stock to cross-check the reports submitted to us and the L-G. If less water is supplied, then we want the Haryana government to give that water to Delhi, so that lakhs of people get relief,” Rai said.

He added that after the Sunday meeting with L-G Saxena, he had said that Haryana was giving its “rightful share” to Delhi. “But this is not true… Haryana has reduced water supply by 100 MGD,” he added.

On the arrival of the monsoon soon, Rai said that “last time, when the water levels had increased, Haryana opened all the gates of Hathnikund barrage and the people of Delhi started drowning… But today, when Delhi needs water, they are not getting it.”

Reacting to the situation, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said that the “AAP has trapped itself in the web of its own indefinite Satyagraha”, and the meeting of AAP ministers at the air-conditioned Satyagraha site on Monday clearly indicates that they are “looking for excuses to end the indefinite Satyagraha”.

“The AAP ministers will go everywhere for extra water but not to the Yamuna River Board or Punjab government because their false claims will be exposed,” Sachdeva alleged.
