A pregnant woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her former live-in partner in Delhi’s Nabi Karim area before the woman’s husband overpowered him and killed him with the same knife Saturday night. The police described the incident as a “crime of passion” involving a love triangle.

The police identified the deceased as Shalini, 22, and Aashu alias Shailendra, 34. Shalini’s husband Aakash sustained stab injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) Hospital.

The incident occurred around 10.15 pm on Saturday near Qutub Road, Nabi Karim. Initial investigation suggests that Aakash and Shalini had gone to meet her mother, Sheila, when Aashu arrived at the spot and allegedly attacked Aakash with a knife.

Aakash managed to evade the assault, but Aashu then turned on Shalini, who was seated in an e-rickshaw, and stabbed her multiple times, said the police.

Seeing his wife being attacked, Aakash intervened and was also allegedly stabbed during the struggle. In the ensuing scuffle, Aakash managed to overpower Aashu and allegedly stabbed him with the same knife.

All three were rushed to LHMC Hospital by Shalini’s brother Rohit. Doctors declared both Aashu and Shalini dead on arrival, while Aakash remains under medical care.

During that time, Shalini had allegedly been in a live-in relationship with Aashu outside Delhi. Aashu was allegedly enraged after Shalini returned to her husband, and police sources say he had also claimed to be the father of Shalini’s pregnancy.

Officials confirmed that Aashu was a ‘bad character’ of the Nabi Karim police station with a criminal background, while Aakash also has three prior criminal cases against him.

Based on the statement of Shalini’s mother Sheila, an FIR has been registered under Sections 103(1) [murder] and 109(1)[attempt to murder] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police have initiated a detailed investigation to determine the sequence of events leading to the fatal confrontation.

“It appears to be a case arising from personal enmity and relationship disputes. The investigation is underway, and all aspects are being probed,” said Nidhin Valsan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central.
