The Delhi Police have arrested a proclaimed offender from the hilly regions of Uttarakhand who had been absconding for four years in connection with an attempted murder case in Nangloi in 2020.

The Crime Branch wing officials said Shankar aka Singhania, a resident of Panipat, Haryana, was wanted for allegedly assaulting a man with a ‘suwa’ (ice-cutting tool) following a road rage incident in Nangloi. Singhania, after being granted bail, had been hiding in Uttarakhand tourist spots under the identity of a pani puri seller to avoid facing trial, the police said on Tuesday.

Singhania, who is addicted to Netflix crime series, told the police that he chose hilly regions to hide, inspired by web series which suggested that remote areas are best to avoid getting tracked, said Vikram Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch).

According to the police, four years ago Singhania struck heavily on the car of a resident of Rana Pratap Nagar amid heavy traffic near Surajmal Vihar Metro Station. The accused then allegedly stabbed the complainant, Honhar, on his stomach, chest and waist, stating that he did not know how to drive.

The police arrested him for the crime based on the complaint registered on March 22, 2020, under sections 307 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code IPC at Nangloi police station.

Singhania was nabbed from Uttarakhand by a team comprising Sub-Inspector Sanjeev Gupta, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ajay, High Constables Ajay Mavi, Devender, Nitin, and Arjun and Constable Aakash under the supervision of inspector Deepak Pandey and ACP Rohitash Kumar.
