The BJP has said infighting within the party helped the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) win so many seats in the Assembly elections. At the BJP meet at party national president Rajnath Singhs residence to analyse the election results on Sunday, senior leaders told the RSS that infighting within the party helped the AAP win several seats, scuttling the partys chances of forming the government despite emerging as the single-largest party in the elections.
Sources said at the meeting, senior leaders and RSS leaders agreed that the AAP won so many seats because of dissidence within the party. Even our workers on the ground were instrumental in AAPs win in many areas. The AAP did not win so many seats without reason. We lost several seats because of infighting, otherwise we would have comfortably secured a majority to form the government. We realised this while analysing why we lost seats that were our strongholds, a senior leader present at the meeting said.
The top brass has even asked the leaders in Delhi to put their house in order while the partys Delhi unit chief Vijay Goel has been advised by Singh and the RSS to refrain from making controversial remarks.
A stern advice has been given to the state unit chief and an explanation over his constructive cooperation to AAP remark has been sought by both the RSS and Singh. Irresponsible remarks that can put the party in a spot should not be made. It has been decided that the party will have an authorised spokesperson to give statements on its behalf, a leader said.
With Delhi being the only state without a government after the elections, the BJP will officially start preparing for fresh elections from Tuesday. A meet has been scheduled for executive committee members to start the process of strengthening the partys position at the booth level.
The party will go for fresh polls under my leadership, Goel said, when his reaction was sought on the resignation by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief J P Agarwal.
The BJP has 32 MLAs in the 70-member House, while the AAP has 28 seats, followed by Congresss eight. JD(U) won one seat while the Mundka seat went to an Independent. The BJP earlier declined to form the government citing lack of majority, following which Jung invited Kejriwal to discuss government formation. In a surprise move, the Congress on Friday submitted a letter to the Lt-Governor,extending unconditional support to the AAP to form the government.
