Northeast Delhi: Boy drowns in Yamuna while trying to catch fish

A 14-year-old boy drowned in the Yamuna floodwater in Northeast Delhi’s Shastri Park on Friday while trying to catch fish with his friends, said police.

Police were informed about the incident around 5 pm on Friday, officers added.

“A police team, along with officials of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), immediately reached the spot near Shastri Park Chowk loop and rescued the 14-year-old boy, a resident of Shastri Park,” said DCP (North East) Ashish Mishra.

The boy was rushed to JPC Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, police said. His body was subsequently sent to the mortuary at the hospital.

“The body of the boy was handed over to his family after a post-mortem examination,” DCP Mishra added.

Investigation revealed that the boy and his friends were trying to catch fish when the incident happened, police said.

“He fell into the water… the river current was too strong and he couldn’t get out,” an officer said.
