Jawaharlal Nehru University stood second among universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2023 for the second consecutive year. It came 10th in the overall category of institutions.

Minister of State for Education and External Affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh Monday released the rankings in 13 categories which include an overall rank, ranks amongst universities, colleges, research institutes and subject-wise.

Speaking to The Indian Express, JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit said: “I thank all our faculty, students and staff who are very committed. Despite being a totally public-funded university, and not being the highest funded, it shows that quality of work can come from any quarter. I think what makes JNU unique is that there is no other university like us; it brings excellence with empathy and equality with equity and inclusion with integrity.”

“We maintained the same rank as last year, we are 10th (in the overall category) because IITs are before us and they are a single-subject institution, and I commend their work. But we are a multi-subject university, and nobody has the type of active students that we have… If you compare us with the first nine (institutes on the list), our funding is nothing, even among central universities, we get very less funding. Despite this, our faculty and students are par excellence,” said Pandit.

The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad generic parameters – Teaching Learning and Resources (TLR ); Research and Professional Practice (RP); Graduation Outcome (GO); Outreach and Inclusivity (OI); and Perception (PR).

As compared to the previous year, the varsity dropped to 65.51 in the perception parameter as compared to 100 last year. It scored the highest in GO with 98.89 this year as compared to 84.80 last year.

The university made huge progress in Outreach and Inclusivity where it rose from 57.46 last year to 73.64 this year.
