Two years into her marriage, a 22-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after being beaten persistently by her in-laws for dowry in Outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy area, the police said on Tuesday. The police have arrested the woman’s husband, Ankit Kumar, 25, after a preliminary investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Rani, who got married to Ankit on June 2, 2023. Both families were residents of Shahbad Dairy and were known to each other.

According to the police, the incident came to light early on Sunday, when Rani’s father, Rampal, 53, got a call from Ankit Kumar and his father Mahender.

On Sunday, at around 2.30 am, Ankit informed Rampal that Rani had died by suicide, Hareshwar Swami, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Outer North, said.

“Rampal and his son rushed her to ESIC Hospital, Sector-15 Rohini, where doctors declared Rani dead,” DCP Swami said.

According to the police, soon after the marriage, Ankit’s family raised demands for dowry.

“Rampal alleged that his daughter was harassed by Ankit, mother-in-law Geeta, and father-in-law Mahender. The in-laws allegedly demanded money for purchasing a motorcycle and later asked for a TV and jewellery. Upon refusal, Rani was allegedly abused, beaten, and repeatedly harassed. She was even sent back to her parental home multiple times,” DCP Swami said.

According to the police, on Sunday, when Ankit went to their room, he found it locked from the inside. “As there was no response to their repeated calls, the family broke open the door and found Rani,” a police officer said.

The police at the SB Dairy station have registered a case under sections 80 for dowry death, 85 for cruelty by husband, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“A statement under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been recorded by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Narela. Further investigation is going on,” DCP Swami said.
