Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated a ‘water ATM’ at Khajan Basti in Mayapuri on Monday. Consumers will be provided with water ATM cards through which they can collect 20 litres of water per day from a designated RO water treatment plant.
While four such RO water treatment plants have been set up so far, at locations including Shakurbasti, Kalkaji and Jharoda, the Delhi government aims to set up 500 of these across the city.
The RO treatment plants will be supplied with raw water drawn from tubewells.
The rate at which the purified water will be supplied to residents is Rs 1.60 for 20 litres, and those living in the JJ clusters will be able to collect the water for free.
Kejriwal said, “There are several such areas in Delhi where due to the high density of population, it is not possible to put a new water pipeline and water is supplied to the citizens through water tankers. Using recent technology, the Delhi government has decided to start a new initiative in such areas.”
