Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport seized 7 kg of marijuana (ganja), worth around Rs 6.93 crore, concealed in the luggage of a passenger who arrived from Tashkent via Istanbul on Tuesday morning.

The action was taken during routine profiling at Terminal 3 in the early hours of October 4 where the passenger, an Indian national, acted suspicious.

According to an official, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at IGI Airport registered a smuggling case after the seizure of 6,939 grams of a green substance, suspected to be marijuana.

The accused had arrived from Tashkent via Istanbul, travelling on Turkish Airlines flight TK 0367 Y (Tashkent to Istanbul) and then connecting to TK 0716 Y (Istanbul to Delhi), the official said.

“On arrival at IGI Airport, he attempted to exit through the green channel, which is reserved for passengers with no goods to declare.

However, based on specific profiling, the security personnel diverted him for further examination,” he said.

Upon X-ray scanning and physical inspection of his baggage — a maroon trolley bag — officials discovered five black and transparent polythene packets.

These packets were concealed within the bag and were found to contain a green narcotic substance. Preliminary diagnostic tests indicated the substance to be marijuana, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs 6.93 crore, the official said.

The passenger was found to be in violation of Section 8 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

He was charged under Sections 20, 23, and 29 of the Act and was formally arrested under Section 43(b) at 3.30 pm on October 4.

The narcotics, along with the concealment material and packaging, were seized under Section 43(a) of the NDPS Act. Further investigation is currently underway, the official added.
