Mantra chanting, yoga: How 28K students of NDMC will now kick off their day under new curriculumThe new curriculum includes five chapters, including Yoga and Meditation, Swachhta curriculum, and ‘Wisdom by Sanskrit Mantras’.

Twenty-eight thousand students across the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) schools will soon kickstart their days by chanting Sanskrit mantras and learning yoga. The students will also learn about Indian philosophies and traditional Guru–Shishya Parampara, all in natural surroundings, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The changes are part of ‘Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi,’ an educational initiative by the NDMC, which was launched by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at Talkatora Stadium on Thursday.

The changes aim “to integrate India’s timeless civilizational values and knowledge systems into the formal curriculum of the schools, and instill values of brotherhood, compassion, and respect,” according to officials.

Giving details about the new curriculum, the CM asserted, “Under the new curriculum, we are not only teaching development but also heritage — ensuring our students connect life values with cultural values and grow into great personalities for the nation.”

She added, “The spirit of Swadeshi is deeply rooted in our heritage and has always been the backbone of our economy. By adopting Swadeshi today, we can once again strengthen India’s economic foundation.”

The new curriculum includes five chapters, including Yoga and Meditation, Swachhta curriculum, and ‘Wisdom by Sanskrit Mantras’.

The NDMC “has initiated a pioneering initiative to incorporate mantra chanting into the daily assembly routines of all its schools. The power of these timeless mantras is now accessible to every NDMC student, helping them embrace values that contribute to a well-rounded and enriching educational experience,” an official statement underlined, adding, “Each mantra selected for this initiative serves a specific purpose, guiding students toward focus, wisdom, compassion, and a deeper understanding of life. By integrating these chants into the fabric of daily life, NDMC schools are nurturing students who excel both intellectually and spiritually, preparing them for a balanced and meaningful life.”

The event was also attended by NDMC member Parvesh Sahib Sing, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, NDMC Chairperson Keshav Chandra, VC Kuljeet Singh Chahal, and council members Anil Valmiki, Dinesh Pratap Singh and OSD (Education), Ranjana Deswal, along with senior officers, head of schools, teachers and students.

The Minister said, “NDMC is incorporating heritage values along with development in its works, an example of this is the foundation stone laying of the clock tower built with composition of Indian architecture.”

He added that the recent Yamuna floods is the reason for not considering the river as heritage and hence not preserving it. “We have to connect our life values with heritage, only then will we be able to achieve real development in this country,” he underlined.

Chandra said that this development of NDMC is also a legacy of change with a new curriculum under a new education system. “Under the motto given by the Prime Minister – “Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi”, yoga, arithmetic, and ancient knowledge traditions have been included in this new curriculum. In this, education of new tradition and knowledge will be given, which Indian heritage will reach the next generation under Viksit Bharat steps,” he said.

Swaraj added that the new chapter being added by NDMC in its new curriculum course, adopting the Prime Minister’s vision of preserving heritage along with development, will prove to be a milestone. “This work is a better effort for “Sankalp Se Siddhi Tak” (from resolution to accomplishment), she added.
