Man’s death in Noida police custody: Two women co-workers arrested on abetment of suicide charge

The family members of Yogesh Kumar had earlier blamed police personnel for his death, alleging they had demanded a Rs 5 lakh bribe to release him.

A day after a 20-year-old man died in police custody, two women — his co-workers at a bakery — were arrested on charges of abetment of suicide, said police.

The family members of Yogesh Kumar had earlier blamed police personnel for his death, alleging they had demanded a Rs 5 lakh bribe to release him. Later, they filed a complaint against the two women, accusing them of levelling false harassment allegations against Kumar and forcing him to end his life, police said.

Kumar died by hanging while in the custody of police in Gautam Buddha Nagar on Thursday morning. “Both accused women were arrested and produced before the court. They have been sent to judicial custody for 14 days…,” said Hemant Upadhyay, ACP-2, Central Noida.

Kumar’s body was recovered from the barracks of Chipiyana outpost in Bisrakh police station area where he was brought in for questioning a day before the incident. He was a resident of Amargarhi village in Aligarh.

“They (the women) had raised false allegations against my brother. Around one-and-a-half months ago, they had levelled similar allegations but a settlement was reached… My brother was in distress due to the repeated complaints. Because of this, he took the extreme step,” alleged Dharamveer, his brother who worked at the same bakery as Kumar.

Dharamveer said following the earlier complaint, the bakery owner had asked Kumar not to come to work but later reinstated him after the matter was resolved.

Meanwhile, Kumar’s kin have not pressed any charges yet against the policemen at the outpost where he was found dead.

Jitendra, another brother of the deceased, said they only wanted the police personnel to be suspended. “Police have said they are taking action against the personnel concerned and a departmental inquiry has been ordered… Those two women… have destroyed our family. We had come so far from home to earn a living, but see what has happened,” said Jitendra.

“After the incident, our whole family has fallen apart. My mother is constantly sharing how Kumar had recently told her on call that he would come to the village to meet her. He wanted to bring her to Noida to stay with him. Now, she will never be able to meet him again,” he added.

Officers said that four policemen, including the Chipiyana outpost in-charge, have been suspended in the case and a departmental inquiry is underway with regard to their conduct in the matter. “The evidence regarding different charges is being collected. We have to check if due process was followed — from receiving the complaint to calling him for questioning. We are also checking if there was any brutality on the part of the police,” said a police officer.
