Customs department officers have foiled a smuggling bid — with the culprit this time having hidden gold inside the cap of a beverage bottle, officials said.

According to officials, an Indian passenger travelling from Dubai to Delhi on an Air India AI-996 flight on October 25 was intercepted at the green channel “after being discreetly followed based on profiling”. Upon inspection, officers discovered that the plastic cap of a beverage bottle had been tampered with to conceal a cylindrical piece of gold.

The gold was meticulously crafted to fit inside the cap, making it difficult to detect during regular checks. Customs officials said the gold, which was seized, weighed 170 grams.

“When it comes to smuggling of gold, the fertile brain of the human race can think in more ways than can be conceived. With the spurt in prices of the yellow metal internationally, the inflow is expected to increase as it becomes more lucrative for the smugglers,” officials said.

Customs officials on Saturday said that on October 24, they seized 996.5 grams of gold worth Rs 1.17 crore from a foreign national who arrived in Delhi from Myanmar on flight 8M-620. The gold, shaped into six bars, was wrapped in brown tape and concealed in her undergarments. The passenger admitted to smuggling it and was arrested under the Customs Act, 1962.

As per figures shared by the Customs department, Delhi, during the financial year 2025–26 (up to October 15), it has seized 26.269 kilograms of gold valued at Rs 24.68 crore. In addition, 52 narcotics-related cases led to the seizure of 239 kilograms of contraband substances such as ganja and cocaine, valued at Rs 338.03 crore. A total of 74 people have been arrested for violations of customs and related laws during this period, officials said.

Officials added that the department also realised duties amounting to Rs 10.8 crore while continuing to “safeguard the nation’s economic frontiers”.
