Tired after a workout, a 24-year-old man sat down on a treadmill to rest for a few minutes — before he was electrocuted and later died. The incident took place at a gym in Rohini’s Sector 15 on Tuesday.
Police said the victim has been identified as Saksham Pruthi. Police have booked the owner and manager of Gymplex Fitness Zone and arrested the owner, Anubhav Duggal, and booked him under IPC sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 304A (causing death by negligence).
When The Indian Express visited the spot on Thursday, the gym was found shut. Police said they have written to MCD about the gym and the safety issues.
According to police, they received a call from Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital about the man’s death on Tuesday morning.
DCP (Rohini) G S Sidhu said, “Local police reached the hospital and found that the man was brought to BSA hospital in an unconscious state from a gym in Sector 15 and died there later. He (touched) a treadmill at the gym and suffered an electric shock. Based on the medico-legal case and post-mortem reports, we have registered a case against the gym management.”
Saksham is survived by his father Mahesh Kumar, a businessman; his mother Kiran; and younger sister Niyati. The family lives in Rohini Sector 19.
He was a B.Tech graduate from Bharti Vidyapeeth University, Delhi, and was working for a tech startup named Sploot in Gurgaon.
Following the incident, the Delhi Gym Association released an advisory for all gyms and fitness centres in the city. It read: “It is… advised that all gym owners get the earthing of their gyms checked immediately… Make sure no loose wires are hanging around the areas where people exercise and get all electrical points checked by an electrician in this rainy season.”
