Man convicted for assaulting policeman with blade

A man who had assaulted a policeman with a blade inside a courtroom after his arrest in a theft case has been sentenced to two years and three months in jail.

A man who had assaulted a policeman with a blade inside a courtroom after his arrest in a theft case has been sentenced to two years and three months in jail. Hasruddin was sentenced by the MM court of Navita Kumari Bagha for assaulting assistant sub-inspector Desh Raj and causing him severe injuries.

While imposing the sentence,the court noted that police had sought maximum punishment for him while Hasruddin had pleaded for leniency as he had already been in jail for two years and three months. “Apart from inflicting injury with a blade on the ASI,the accused had obstructed him in discharge of his public function and further assaulted and used criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty and thus committed offence under Sections 324,186 and 353 of the IPC. In view of the facts and circumstances,the convict is sentenced to imprisonment for the period already undergone by him,” the court said.

On October 3,2008,Hasruddin had been brought to the court by ASI Desh Raj after being arrested for theft. Desh Raj deposed that after the hearing of the case,he was taking Hasruddin to the lock-up when Hasruddin took advantage of the crowd inside the court and slashed his cheek using a blade that was kept on a table. Later he used the same blade to stab himself in the abdomen.
