A 25-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly strangling his cousin and dumping his body in a drain at a village in Greater Noida West’s Bisrakh. Police said the man’s wife had complained that she was being harassed by the cousin’s repeated video calls.
The accused, Iqrar Saifi, was sent to judicial custody. While he allegedly killed his cousin Naseem on September 2, the body was found by the police on September 5 from a drain at Jalpura village in Greater Noida’s Dadri.
Station House Officer Manoj Kumar Singh of Bisrakh police station said the matter came to light when a missing person’s complaint was filed by Naseem’s brother Saleem on September 2.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Shakti Mohan Avasthy said Iqrar was arrested from near Paramount City Square in Bisrakh. “Both men worked as carpenters and had been staying on rent at Aimnabad village of Greater Noida West for the last four years,” he added.
During questioning, police said that Saifi claimed that Naseem used to make video calls to his wife from different numbers. “Iqrar said that he had asked Naseem to back off, but he did not listen,” said an officer.
“On September 2, when Iqrar was at a cricket ground near Aimnabad, he received a call from his wife stating that Naseem had again made a video call. Iqrar got angry and hatched a plan to kill him,” the officer added.
Iqrar allegedly told the police, “I called Naseem and asked him to come to the cricket ground on the pretext of going somewhere. Naseem came on his motorcycle… When we reached near Jalpura village, we parked the bike and I asked Naseem why he was harassing my wife. When I asked for his phone, he refused to hand it over… I then grabbed Naseem by the throat and strangled him to death.”
After his death, Iqrar took out Naseem’s wallet and threw his body in a nearby drain, police said.
